Drummer, educator
Manolis Papadopoulos was born in Athens,Greece. By the age of six, he started taking piano lessons at Athenaeum conservatory until he was 12 years old, but his main interest were the drums. Self taught at first, started playing with rock bands. Later on, studied drums in Philipos Nakas Conservatory, with the great jazz drummer Spyros Panagiotopoulos who inspired him to focus mostly in jazz. At the same time he studied jazz harmony, orchestration, etc. He also took private lessons from drummers such as Ralph Peterson, Antonio Sanchez, Richie Morales, Ron Savage, and participated in masterclasses and worckshops with great drummers such as Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Adam Nusbaum and many others.
He has worked and colaborated with many different jazz musicians in Athens such as Manos Saridakis, Dimitris Tsekouras, Panagiotis Raptis, Orestis Atsalakis, Antonis Arvanitis, Panagiotis Athanatos, Panos Tsigos, Antonis Skamnakis, Tasos Bakogiannis and many others.
During 2012 he formed Nimbus4, a jazz quartet with Panagiotis Raptis, Orestis Atsalakis and Christos Koromilas, playing modern jazz tunes.
Since 2014, he is a member of the world-ethnic jazz group Guitakora, with Effie Psiachoulia on Kora(African harp) and at the same time , with saxophone player Panagiotis Raptis formed Regress² , a free jazz duet, experimenting on sound, form and improvisation.
Manolis Papadopoulos is living in Athens and teaching drums at Philipos Nakas Conservatory.
