Olivier Gatto was born in Manosque, Provence. He started music with piano lessons when he was 7 and switched to bass when he was 21.
He studied jazz composition and arranging at the Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1986 to 1988, since 1989, the year when he left Boston, he has performed in Europe, USA and Asia with stellar musicians such as Joe Henderson, Billy Cobham,Benny Golson, Lee Konitz,and with some of the best musicians of his generation: Mark Turner, Ravi Coltrane, Roy Hargrove, Sam Newsome, just to name a few.
He is the leader of two groups, the Spiritual Warriors Orchestra & the Afro-Borikén Jazz Ensemble, where he mixes Black American Music (#BAM) and Afro-Puertorican rhythms (Bombas & Plenas).
He has recorded with his groups and also with John Stubblefield, George Cables, Billy Cobham, Salif Keita, Cesaria Evora etc…
He is also a renowned teacher and shares his experience through master classes and workshops;
his teaching is influenced by Sergiu Celibidache, John Stubblefield and his own research on history and philosophy (musical phenomenology).
