Atrium of the Old Municipal Hospital
For three unique nights, on Thursday 16th , Friday 17th and Saturday 18th of June (from 21:00) the ambitious programme brings to the atmospheric place of the Atrium of the Old Municipal Hospital six top groups, that offer a total artistic aspect from a different each time musical view.
The beginning will take place on Thursday, June 16th with the groundbreaking and original duet of Spyweirdos and Sotiris Douvas. An explosive mixture of Greek experimental electronic and free jazz. Spyweirdos, (famous from his collaboration with Alva Noto, Murcof, Panacea, Funcarma, Ollie Olsen, Giannis Mourtzopoulos, Floros Floridis and having released outstanding albums) and Sotiris Douvas, (member of Poly Quartet, with an excellent course in Greek and international space and collaborations with Soo Cho, Jason Lindner, John Ruocco, Heyn Van Den Geyn, Jasper Blom, Eric Vloeimans, Thanassis Papakonstantinou, Eleni Karaindrou, Manos Achalinotopoulos, David Lynch and the Heavy Metal Band, Thodoris Relios), will appear together on stage opening new roads in the contemporary experimental musical stage.
At the same night Kostas Theodorou, the eminent double-bass player and composer with his quintet, composed of select personalities of not only contemporary Greek jazz music- Takis Farazis: piano, Kyriakos Tapakis: oud, nougat, tambour, Kostas Anastasiadis: drums, Pantelis Stoikos: trumpet, kaval, accordion, will perform the programme “Songs without words”, which has recently warm reception by both audience and critics in the famous festival “Jazzahead” of Bremen. Moody songs for moons and persons. Stories with sounds, voices, silences. Dances … and more dances! A chosen programme with Kostas Theodorou’s personal stamp, which released without stylistic limits and with one admirable balance between the structured composition and improvisation. An ideal and most personal aspect of Balkan Jazz, which will enchant us.
On Friday, June 17th the atmosphere will transfer in the space of progressive folk rock with jazz influence, by the top group Ciccada, which has left speechless both critics and audience in international level with its great album “A child in the mirror”, will offer a fascinating, atmospheric music experience. The album is at the first places in the 2010’s and 2011’s releases, in which top musicians of progressive stage take part, such as the great drummer Alberti De Grandis of DFA and Paolo Botta of Yugen in Keyboards, P. Cavedon, V. Cipollone and M. Signo.
The quartet of a legend in the international jazz musical stage, Milcho Leviev the Bulgarian pianist and composer, who was famous in America for many years, will perform next. He has toured in whole America and Europe, has given concerts and recorded with outstanding personalities of jazz music, such as Art Pepper, Roy Haynes, Dave Holland, Charlie Haden, Herbie Mann Marc Murphy, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Randy Brecker, Michel Lambert, Benny Golson, Bill Hollman, Carmen McRae, Joe Farrell, John Klemmer, James Newton, Manhattan Transfer, Ray Brown and Peter Erskine, Michel Franks, Michel Donato, Lainie Kazan, Willie Bo, with eminent Jazz Bulgarian musicians, such as Theodosii Spassov and many others, was permanent member and collaborator of Don Ellis Orchestra and Billy Cobham Band (composer, orchestrator, pianist) and member of the legendary “Jazz Focus ‘65” group. He has collaborated with many Greek jazzmen such as Giotis Kioutsoglou, Pantelis Stoikos, Lakis Tzimkas, David Lynch, Stavros Lantsias, and of course with the expressional Bulgarian singer Viki Almazidou, with who subscribes the album “Quiet Song”. With his great discography and the estimate he has obtained by the international jazz standard, he will perform in Patras with Viki Almazidou, the double — bass player Lakis Tzimkas and the drummer Christos Germenoglou.
On Saturday, June 18th the famous guitarist, composer and improvisator Babis Papadopoulos (guitar, electronics) will perform first. Mpampis Papadopoulos, well — known from his many year participation in “Trypes”, as well as his innovative orchestrations and participation in the releases and the concerts of Thanassis Papakonstantinou, Socratis Malamas, Nikos Papazoglou, Floros Floridis, and Ghimerini Kolymvites, succeed to pass easily from jazz to Greek popular music to rock psychedelic and the avant garde of New York, always with unique improvisations and unexpected music experiments.
At same night the famous trio “Trilogia” of Giorgos Trantalidis, drummer and composer, former member of “Socrates”. Giorgos Trantalidis is a musician, who his name has been connected with the beginning and the brilliant course of Greek jazz music. He is the first Greek jazzman, who combines musically the communication forms of jazz with the traditional musical schemes, mostly Greek, one decade before it became fashion. Giorgos Kontrafouris, the ingenious virtuoso in hammond and Giotis Samaras, the virtuoso guitarist and member of the great group “Page One”, with impressive collaborations at Greek and international music stage, will perform with him. The appearance of the explosive trio “Trilogia” promises to audience an unforgettable night full of vividness, passion, enjoyment and exemplary musical sounds by three top artists, who will come almost together with the release of the wonderful album of Giorgos Trantalidis “Global Vision”, in which prestigious musicians, such as Fred Lipsius, Barry Finnerty, Alex Foster, Ron McClure, Tony Lakatos, participate.
